Neil Young - Guitar, Keyboards, Harmonica
Ralph Molina - Drums
Billy Talbot - Bass
Frank “Pancho” Sampedro - Guitar, Keyboards

Recorded at San Francisco’s Cow Palace one October night in 1978, it spotlights Young’s versatility. The talented and magnetic performer switches easily between playing solo on acoustic guitar or piano on tracks like “Sugar Mountain” and “Comes a Time” and totally rocking out with Crazy Horse on “Cinnamon Girl” and the blustery closer “Like a Hurricane.”

I was surprised that it was Tony -not Ozzy- who was in front of the stage. Ozzy jumped and moved a lot in order to draw attention, as if he meant : “Look, I am the boss”.

Editorial Comment:
Sound A/A+
Performance A/A+

- Amazing digital recording without any interruptions from
start to finish. Only the most minor of btwn song crackles
can be heard from the poor extraction. A SBD recording with
an obvious “live mic” feed that provides wonderful atmosphere
and intimacy with the crowd that seems more like DMB was live
at a club show than at the huge Soldier Field. Being a Dead
Head, this reminds me of some Grateful Dead FM’s like 4/27/77
or even some of the Healy Matrix’s. Incredibly sound and and
easy A rating if not an A+ (save for the tiny extraction issues)

- A typical incredible show from the Summer Tour 2001. Try
to find a bad one. The Band is in top form and Dave is in a
great mood. Highlighting material from the Lillywhite/Busted
stuff album but including a nice section of both DMB classics
and fan favorites. Plus a wonderful guest appearance from Buddy
Guy and an all-time classic version of Angel.

Notes:
This was sent to me by the ETS member, accelestar. I am not going to say where this came from but these rehearsals are from the month of June, so right in the middle of rehearsals for the upcoming Festival dates as well as the fall Tension 2013 tour. There were two long mp3 files that I received. One was just a few songs that they stopped and started with Trent giving some advice along the way, as well as setting up the mix on the board. The other mp3 file was a full run through performance of one of the festival sets calibrating Trent’s IEM feed along the way with only one stop in 1,000,000 that I removed because they restarted the song fully. I have not included the long files, only the tracked version to play it like a seamless performance. It was very interesting to hear some of the “behind the scenes” talk in what goes on at rehearsals but I don’t think that is something that needs to be public. I hope everyone can understand that as these are rehearsals. and obviously the quality is phenomenal!

Recorded from Section 218

American Airlines Center was packed to the rafters for the return of Pearl Jam. I had not realized it but Eddie was commenting that they had not been to Dallas in like 10 years. They definitely need to come back more often. I really like the new album and was glad with the inclusion of the songs from Lightning Bolt, but have to admit being disappointed that they did not play Even Flow or Yellow Ledbetter. I think they did an admirable job on The Real Me.

I have been fighting a cold all week, downing the meds to make sure I was not sick at the show. Unfortunately I was not completely over it and there are a couple of spots where I cough pretty prominently on the recording I did a pretty good job of fighting until it was between songs or the encore breaks but sometimes I just couldn’t help it. It is not anything that I think destroys the recording or anything but it is there. Probably worse during the songs after the first encore break

(JGB, 9/1/90, Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, CA)
6. Tangled Up In Blue (12:20)
(JGB, 8/8/90, The Warfield, San Francisco)

My MO: I listened to as many versions of each song as I could find. That meant roughly 140 versions of Simple Twist and anywhere from 20-75 versions of most of the others. I eliminated those that didn’t pass a minimum threshhold of listenability and then gave full listens to all the other versions. My selections were based on whatever whims I had at the time. Basically, though, vocals were usually a minor consideration. Sound quality was a priority but not that it was what informed my final choices. The only thing I knew beforehand was that the 8/8/90 Tangled Up In Blue would be included. It is my favorite Jerry performance in any incarnation and the last five minutes are the greatest guitar solo I’ve ever heard from anybody, anywhere, anytime. It’s also what got the idea in my head to do this.

The only omission was All Along The Watchtower, which was played once (10/25/87) and does not circulate. I chose the better part of valor and decided against using the version released as part of the Pure Jerry series. Fully recognizing that I couldn’t be all things to all people, I hope this works as most things or most people.

As I was dealing with 19 different tracks from 18 different sources (mostly aud’s), matching levels and segueing were somewhat problematic. I have tried to minimize this as best I could, or at least as gently as possible.

Thanks to:
Tol, who singularly made this possible.

Rory Kallfelz, who came through big-time when I sent out a short-notice SOS for help tweaking the art.
