The year Punk broke, Nirvana came to Singapore knowing their debut mainstream album, Nevermind, was No. 1 in America. This was their first and only trip to the “Far East” and management had decided the only civilised nation to visit in South-east Asia was Singapore. The only thing an insular Kurt Cobain knew about this mysterious geographical theatre was recorded in a journal entry, “(I) found myself realising that I wouldn’t be able to get drugs when we got to Japan and Australia.” There was something else he found when he arrived in Singapore. He would need a government permit to play there.

No one in the Geffen office in Singapore had the presence of mind to ask Nirvana, before they arrived, whether they would like to play a promo concert here. Instead a contest was organised and the prize was a trip to Japan to watch Nirvana play. But when Cobain was accosted by fans at Changi International Airport and went through the routine of being chased to his tour bus, he wanted to play.

Unfortunately, Nirvana’s stay was far too short. An entertainment permit could not be rushed out in time for America’s No. 1 band to play here. There were rules to be followed. A list of the songs had to be submitted to the police and the lyrics provided for inspection. The venue had to be safe and properly policed to prevent rioting. It was 1992, the Dark Ages of Singapore pop culture. Fire Extinguisher is a bootleg of Nirvana’s final show in Tokyo at the Nakano Sunplaza on February 19, 1992, after leaving Singapore. It was also the last time Kurt Cobain would set foot in the Far East. For the hundreds of Japanese who sensed an event and bought tickets, they would be the envy of friends having seen Nirvana live.

The set itself was trimmed of the slower numbers like Something In The Way, Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam and the new Rape Me. Japanese audiences are polite and quiet. Kurt preferred to turn on the punks in the audience with a brief but stormy show. The band is on auto-pilot in the first half with uninspired versions of Been A Son, Come As You Are, Lithium and About A Girl. But just when you think, nothing’s going to happen, Kurt finally says something from the stage by way of introducing the next song, School: “…about two days ago, I got really sick. I got this really bad cold…,” he tells the audience. “Like a flu, like illness, whatever.” Did his Japanese fans understand?

“And ah the doctor,” he continues, “gave me this stuff to drink.” Cobain’s voice is as innocent as an angel’s when he tells them just what’s in the drink.

“I think it’s Chinese herbs and it has cow sperm in it and it’s got like lizard penis scrapings and ahh… I feel really sick but it just makes me feel real good to know that I’ve been drinking cow semen…” His voice trails off as he allows the last words to make its impact. “It makes you feel good.” The sarcasm is pointed at an unknown target - doctors, officialdom, record company execs, the man?

The version of School they play tonight is perhaps the most intense. “Won’t you believe it, it’s just my luck?” Cobain starts, referencing some unhappy recent event. Then comes the reply in the chorus of “no recess, no recess, no recess.” Cobain changes it coming in the second time. Now he sings with a sinister tone changing the lyrics to, “drinking cow sperm again… drinking cow sperm again…” He repeats it over and over and then slams the breaks, screaming “no recess, no recess” for the final time. Something has obviously touched an inner chord in him to release the energy. School has always been a song about stultifying conformity. Tonight it’s not only the lack of a recess break but the punishment of drinking “cow sperm again” that angers him.

For the rest of the show, the other members are like demons behind their singer. Aneurysm, Love Buzz, Polly, Territorial Pissing and the grand finale of Smells Like Teen Spirit unite the three into one single unit, pounding out pure punk - disreputable, antagonistic, iconoclastic and raging full on. But from all accounts when Kurt Cobain was in Japan, he was happy. He reportedly was quite taken by the outpouring of gifts from the Japanese and requested that they give him only Hello Kitty gifts. He was playful and bought himself new pajamas which he wore on stage. He also met his friends, the Shonen Knife, a trio of Japanese girls whom he had dinner with and later went to see them play.

Earlier, Kurt was reportedly unhappy in Australia where he had stomach pains, possibly a symptom of drug withdrawal. When he visited a hospital there, he was upset when he overheard a nurse describe him as a “junkie.” But Kurt Cobain adored Japan for its unique culture. It’s fitting that the only document from his Far East tour is this final concert in Japan. - Michael Cheah

NOTES
—————

This concert is arguably the best Alice in Chains concert ever. The thing that I love about this recording is that it was at the peak of their blackness. In only a few months from this date would Staley declare himself too weak to tour with Metallica, virtually ending Alice’s reign of the concert stage, in a way making this one of the last “real” concerts they would do (opening for KISS really doesn’t count, making their acoustic show their last great concert). Not to mention that this setlist is amazing. “Swarm” captures quite a emotional performance from Staley through wretching screams and showmanship to the highest level. You will also hear him hit the highest note ever in “Hate To Feel”. The band was definitely “on” tonight, and everything (i.e. Man in the Box, Dam That River, Them Bones, What the Hell Have I) is taken much faster than usual. Even though Sean must have been in a rush, it still turns out awesome. To cap off an amazing night, Alice closes with their finest performance of “Rain When I Die”. That alone is worth the download of this boot.

This particular recording has been remastered by me and what I did was give it a more rich sound instead of a tinny, muddy sound that the orginal bootleg had. I also brought out the highs so everything is crystal clear and enjoyable to listen to. I also updated the artwork with that of my own.

The only downside about this recording is a slight tick between “Dirt” and “Man in the Box” and at the beginning of “Rooster”. These were the only two places I could not edit out the 2 second gap between songs.

This is Alice at their finest hour, so CRANK UP this show and ENJOY!!

Story from…
http://www.neumu.net/drama/2002/2002-00030/2002-00030_drama.shtml

Wilco’s “Basement Tapes”

The “YHF Demos” are the great lost Wilco album — now if only someone would release them.

The ink that says “Wilco YHF Demos” is slightly smeared on the home-printed white cover of the CD that arrived the other day. The 21 songs on this “Basement Tapes” CD, sent from a friend, were downloaded as MP3 files from some Web location.

I don’t use the phrase “Basement Tapes” lightly. It’s an intentional reference to the recordings Bob Dylan and The Band made up in Woodstock in the late ’60s. At an hour and 15 minutes, this is Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as a two-record set. But it’s also much more expansive, and not just because of length. It is an amazing album, and I certainly hope that Wilco will choose to release it. I find it captivating in a way that the official album isn’t — probably due to the inclusion of “Venus Stop the Train” and some others that didn’t make it onto the completed album. But also because, from start to finish, it works as an album, as a body of work that I want to hear all the way from track one — a version of “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” — through an alternate take of “Not for the Season.”

With Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Jeff Tweedy drew a line in the sand. No, he was not that alt-country guy you wanted him to be. If you thought Summerteeth was just a diversion, think again, he seemed to be saying. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is, perhaps, his way of declaring himself a major artist, as daring as those who clearly have inspired him, including The Beatles and Brian Wilson. An artist not content to work within the established structures and sounds that define musical genres.

So he started fucking with the material, adding odd sounds, deconstructing songs, creating a kind of art piece. And he was successful. The album is good, and the world now sees him as a very different kind of artist than they did before.

Only, for me, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot turned out to be one of those albums that you appreciate intellectually, that you know is “good” and that you should like, only you never seem to play it. Or you play a couple of songs, but don’t listen through from start to finish. Well, don’t know about you, maybe you played your copy to death, but I’ve hardly played mine since my initial attempts to dig into it.

I must add that, because of all the drama surrounding the official album — record company politics that found one AOL Time Warner label dropping the band while another signed them up — my initial experience of the album was a letdown.

The YHF demos are something else. With no real expectations, I put the CD in my car stereo on my way home from the post office the other day, and I’ve been playing it incessantly ever since. It’s hard to generalize, but a lot of this album seems to be lamenting a romance that didn’t work out; beyond that, Tweedy seems to be catching the disillusionment that many feel now — both disillusionment and nostalgia for a past that we likely recall via romanticized memories (“Heavy Metal Drummer”). “I miss the innocence I’ve known/ Playing Kiss covers, beautiful and stoned,” he sings in “Heavy Metal Drummer,” a different version of the song that appeared on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

It’s not that these demos are stripped down. They’re not (or at least some of them aren’t), and thus they feel more organic. It’s just that, for the most part, the arrangements are more… traditional. “Alone,” for example, a song that didn’t make it onto the official album, rocks along to an old-time melody and some honky-tonk. It has the feel of Dylan and The Band doing “Don’t Ya Tell Henry.”

“Nothing Up My Sleeve,” also not on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, is a folk-rocker with double-tracked vocals, just a single acoustic guitar for accompaniment and a Beatles-esque melody. Won’t Let You Down is like the Rolling Stones doing country-rock. The lyric is simple, almost a cliché, only it’s not, because of the way Tweedy sings it. His voice is scratchy, a bit frail, echoing Jagger from the Stones’ Beggar’s Banquet days. He makes the song’s sentiment sound like it’s being expressed for the first time. “When you’re getting older/ The weight will lift from your shoulders/ There’s one thing to remember/ I’m not gone.” And then into the chorus: “I won’t ever let you down/ I won’t ever let you down… I promise…”

Tweedy sounds like he means it on every song, but there’s something more low-key throughout about his vocals, like he’s having fun trying out different voices. And over the course of the18 songs that have vocals, there’s a feeling of intimacy. This isn’t the artist making “ART,” it’s just a passionate singer who writes moving songs getting them down on tape. But it’s also a self-conscious artist experimenting within traditional song structures, rather than trying to break them down.

There are three instrumentals (well, two, and an alternate take). The first is a pretty interlude with piano and strings, a gentle melody that repeats again and again. The second is a kind of country-honk affair, strummed acoustic guitars and backwoods rhythms, that suddenly breaks open into a kind of Abbey Road-styled bridge with drums, synths and God knows what else. The alternate take of that second one is an even trippier piece that takes me back to The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour.

The piano-based ballad “Venus Stop the Train” is another stunner. “I kept my distance. ’cause she fell in love with everyone,” Tweedy sings. “Smoking grass and taking Christmas trees/ She fell in love with me.” “Rhythm” is just Tweedy singing over simple piano accompaniment. The way the vocals and piano were recorded for both remind me of John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band recordings.

I guess you could accuse me of being a tease — after all, getting a hold of these demos may not be the easiest thing. Or you might think I’m doing that rock-critic thing I made fun of recently, raving about songs most people may never hear. Fuck it. This stuff is too good, and you oughta know about it. And if you can find it, more power to ya!
